Principal architect, founder and director of Metroworks, Melissa Fleming has been involved in the industry full-time since graduating with Honours from Deakin University in 1995. She has single-handedly developed the business into a multi-award winning, boutique practice that offers high quality and personal architectural solutions. Melissa’s registrations and qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Architecture (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Arts (Architecture)
  • Registered with Architects Registration Board of Victoria (ARBV)
  • A+ Member of Australian Institute of Architects (AIA)

Melissa says…

For me, architecture is the perfect blend of art and science. Not only do buildings need to look great and reflect the character of their occupants, they also need to stand up, their materials need to be robust and they need to keep out the weather. Architecture – particularly residential architecture – also gives me the chance to contribute to the way my clients live – now and on into the future. It is an opportunity I grab with both hands, but also treat with respect and humility.

Frank Lloyd Wright. I can identify with his work because he designed so many houses and residential projects as well as his larger scale work. Although he was an eccentric character, I love the detail and focus he put into each project.

If we’re talking residential buildings, then it would have to be the Kaufmann House – better known as Fallingwater by Frank Lloyd Wright. Built over a waterfall, the house is so beautifully nestled into the site, it appears to be an organic part of the landscape. Check out the official website here for more information. But if we’re talking commercial buildings – I love the Chrysler Building in New York City, designed by architect William Van Alen. Often overshadowed by the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building is a beautiful example of Art Deco style architecture. Although it is a large-scale building, it also contains some beautiful detailing – especially the beautiful ornamentation of the stepped curve apex. Going solo and starting Metroworks. Although it is a challenge at times, running my own practice has allowed me the opportunity to step out from the “drafting room” in the back to meet and engage with my clients one-on-one.

…pretty quickly that I have two brown burmese cats – Charlie and Oscar. I may also let it slip that I am a Bombers supporter and an absolute “cricket tragic”!
